About The Centre

The Centre specialises in the application of software engineering and artifical intelligence techniques to real life industrial and commercial problems. Groups within the Centre have been active in this area since the 1980s, and have undertaken projects in Expert Systems, Genetic Algorithms, Case-Based Reasoning, Knowledge Management, Data Mining Middleware and Autonomic Computing. The Centre attracts substantial funding from the EU and UK government departments and agencies and is currently involved in substantial industrial collaborations funded by the DTI.

Most of the research activities of the Centre are conducted through the Computing Research Group (CRG). The CRG coordinates the research activities of the Computer  Science and Computer Systems Technology departments at the School of Computing and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Greenwich. The CRG has formed the basis of the Greenwich RAE submission in comuting, including the RAE 2001 (awarded 4) and RAE 2008.

CRG consists of 5 established research groups:

In addition, a number of smaller groups operate within the CRG concentrating on new areas of research and application, including Software Engineering, Mobile Computing, Networking and Computer Security.

A great deal of the Centre's research activities and projects concentrate on multidisciplinary research and application on engineering, industrial and business problems. This id done mainly through the strategic close collaboration with the Centre for Numerical Modelling and Process Analysis (CNMPA) and with collaborations with other Greenwich researchers and Universities and Business in the UK and all over the world.

The Centre for Computational and Computer Science is also involved directly in enterprise activities and projects, through CRG activities, and through the Centre for Intelligent Business Improvement (CIBI), which concentrates on the application and commercialisation of the Centre's distinctive research and  industrial application skills and capabilities. This is done mainly through Consultancy, KTP projects and industrial short courses.

Our Vision

The Centre's vision is to continue its growth as a recognised leader in its key areas of research by:

  • Undertaking leading-edge research into its established areas of expertise AI, CBR, Autonomics, Intelligent Systems, High Performance Computing, Computational Science and Process Optimisation.
  • Grow new areas of research and new application areas for existing research capability.
  • Increasing the number of our multi-disciplinary research staff and our output of Masters and Doctoral graduates.
  • Ensuring our computational and experimental infrastructure remains state-of-the-art.
  • Generating 20% growth in revenues during the period 2006-2011 by providing government and industry wider access to our unique research, software, consultancy and educational offerings.
